My name is Félicien Torres, 47 years old and I work with the Ecole National d’Aviation Civil (ENAC) for the “application support” of the exploitation of the air traffic control simulators. Within this framework, I contribute to the development of a simulator for the ENAC and EUROCONTROL and naturally the documentation, emails and meetings are done only in English. I thus tested the need to supplement my training for this language. I found with “i2i-linguistics” a solution which corresponds to my requirements while respecting my diary. In addition to the fact of being able to study in my office, it is in the planning of the courses that I find the flexibility of this concept. The level of interactivity is excellent; one can work online on documents and converse at same time. This made it possible to quickly improve my level of grammar. I also make a point of thanking my teacher for his professionalism and patience.

Outre le fait de pouvoir étudier de mon bureau, c'est dans la planification des cours que je trouve la souplesse de ce concept. Le niveau d'interactivité est excellent, on peut travailler en ligne sur des documents et converser dans le même temps. Ceci a permis d'améliorer rapidement mon niveau de grammaire. I've always been a fairly techie person, but I'd never been one for web conferencing or anything like that. So I admit that despite teaching English for several years, mostly on a 1-to-1 basis, I was still nervous about teaching using the MET-VC. As if there weren't enough potential issues to deal with when teaching a client, I could do without adding the contribution of Mr Gates and his 'blue screen of death' to the equation. Besides, even if it worked without technical problems, isn't the webcam image too jerky and the audio too delayed to be of any help in language teaching? Indeed, isn't the whole 'online English' lesson too clunky to be anything but inferior to that of the in-person 1-to-1 class?

Well, the short answer is no. Teaching using the MET-VC is fairly intuitive, although it does help if you don't worry about the way the class is delivered, but rather on the content of your classes. After all, there isn't much difference between 'sharing a document' and showing a document to a student in person. Or between 'sharing an application' and asking the student to write something down or complete a gap fill. So once you get past that slight fear of unknown technology and realise that despite the interface it's still essentially the 1-to-1 tuition that we have done for so long, it becomes a lot easier.

Indeed, in some ways it's superior to 'traditional classroom' teaching. In the MET-VC you can present lessons using PowerPoint presentations, Word documents or the Whiteboard. Vocabulary can quickly be explained using Google Images rather than a scratchy drawing on the board. Students can move from conversational work to writing exercises to interactive Flash-based exercises at the click of a button, rather than having to queue outside the IT room, wait for the computer to warm up, and so on (something I'm sure we've all experienced in our school-based lessons).

Perhaps the only difference between teaching in the MET-VC and teaching in the traditional classroom is that you have to perhaps be slightly better prepared than for classroom teaching. After all, all of your resources have to be in electronic format as Word documents, pdfs or PowerPoint presentations. You can't rush to the resources room and photocopy something or grab an activity from the bottom of your bag if your lesson is running short. But again, 'having to be prepared' is hardly a bad thing, and is obviously another benefit from the clients' point of view.

Overall, I'm very impressed with the system, both how easy it is to use, but also how flexible and versatile it is. And I can attest that despite never any nearer than several hundred miles from your student, you still build a good relationship with them very quickly. The webcam really isn't a barrier to getting to know them.

So my experiences of teaching using the MET-VC have been wholly positive. In fact, the only thing that I'm still not used to is spending an hour with a student, seeing what's going on outside their office windows several hundred miles away one moment, then standing in my kitchen, post-class, making a cup of coffee the next. It makes you realise that nowadays the world really is very small indeed. But then, if that's the case, why not take advantage of it?

I am not a very well organized person and when I decided to take Cambridge exams I had to quickly find a teacher to improve my English. So, I created a profile on MET to take a quick look and perhaps take some lessons.

Je ne suis pas une personne très bien organisée et quand j'ai décidé de passer un des examens de Cambridge j'ai dû rapidement trouver un professeur pour améliorer mon anglais. Ainsi, j'ai créé un profil sur MET pour jeter un coup d’œil et peut-être pour prendre quelques leçons.

Rob Marshall m'a rapidement contacté et m'a aidé à trouver un professeur selon mes besoins personnels. Mes cours avec James Burkes étaient très utiles pour ma préparation à l'examen et il était très gentil et compréhensif aussi !

En fait, la salle de classe virtuelle n'est pas très différente d'une vraie et le contact est très facile.

Les salles de classe virtuelles vous permettent d'établir votre propre programme comme vous le désirez, choisir le nombre de leçons aussi bien que le professeur, et d'apprendre l'anglais avec un très bon formateur!

Je recommanderai le site web à mes amis s'ils veulent apprendre l’anglais parce que je pense que les professeurs de MET sont efficaces et sympathiques.

Grace à MET j'ai pu travailler à mon rythme et selon mes disponibilités afin d'améliorer mon niveau à L'IELTS.

Le site est très facile d'utilisation et permet un partage des documents utile pour progresser à l'oral comme à l'écrit.

La grande force de MET est le principe du face à face, permettant d'ajuster au mieux le travail aux besoins de l'étudiant qui ne se contente plus de faire des exercices de grammaire rébarbatifs seul devant son écran.

Thanks to MET I've been able to work during my free time and at my own pace to improve my IELTS examination level.

The site is very easy to use and allows you to share documents, so you can make progress in both oral and written English.

Je suis étudiante depuis quelques semaines des cours de I2I linguistics dans le cadre de mon DIF.

Enfin, la relation qui s'établit entre le professeur et l'élève est non seulement professionnelle mais aussi très aimable et permet de se sentir rapidement à l'aise et de prendre confiance pour évoluer et faire évoluer son anglais rapidement.
